Ry Rocklen, mixed media, 2008
The American contemporary artist Ry Rocklen makes avid use of discarded objects. Inspired by the readymade concept and following Arte Povera, he creates his objects and installations. His focus is on the aesthetic and mystical qualities of the materials he finds. His working method is like a tribute to what was once meaningfully present versus the new life that he respectfully preserves within the new expression. With a wide diversity of materials and techniques combined with spiritual and cultural values of objects, the artist offers us a variable oeuvre full of his ideas.
‘The door’, a three-dimensional sculpture, can be admired from different perspectives. The small mirror tiles ensure attention and simultaneously reflect the environment and its viewer. The stained glass-inspired viewing window refers to a traditional custom that can also be found photographically on the reverse of the work.
