Robert Dandarov, oil on canvas, 2011

Macedonian American artist Robert Dandarov’s work takes a journey through fact and fantasy. He analyses his modern era and emphasizes the obsession with violence and illusion. His narrative talent displays a visual language based on mythology, history, religion, science and literature. From this unlimited universe, he explores a possible reality of the visible and the invisible. His grotesque oeuvre is a myth of haunting works that transcends our thinking.

Bees play a crucial role in animal and human existence and survival. A symbolic reference with which Dandarov identifies himself, and generally artistry. They are a common element in his oeuvre, as are the honeycombs that emphasise the fertility of their work ethic. With ‘The Beekeeper’, the artist also refers to the faceless crucified Christ. Here, his body and blood provide the nutrients for the bees’ survival: an ultimate symbol that represents the sacrifice to achieve good art.
