Marcel Broodthaers, Photographic canvas with red and black felt pen, 1967
With poetic irony, Marcel Broodthaers critically questions the cultural habit of his time. He preached dialogue for the validity of art and maintains a hunger for art. In his literary oeuvre, one finds poetic metaphors with numerous puns, his word and matter bring unrest. His imagination is conflicting, confusing and critical – but at the same time a source full of artistic desire.
‘Le Corbeau et le Renard’ combines several elements of a world-famous fable from the 17th century. With ‘La Lecture’, the artist creates illegibility fuelled by the empty glass that once again magnifies the meaningless. As if struggling with himself, the artist reduces his canvas to a literary question mark. His letter object proves the emptiness behind art. The viewer who exceeds his mental pain threshold will be able to decipher the purpose.
