Larry Poons, oil on canvas, 1975
The American Larry Poons was born in Japan and studied a music education before starting a career as a visual artist. Musical structures, rhythm and movement are the energetic features of his oeuvre, which developed within an abstract style. His early work was made on mathematical principles, evolving further towards more technical freedom. So he glues all kinds of materials to his carrier and then throws thick packs of paint against these canvases. In the 1990s, the artist reverts to a paintbrush and works on gigantic canvases that he crops afterwards.
‘Coming up – on M’ is a repetition of the movement. The work consists of vertically dripping streams of paint that emphasize continuity. Under the cadence of colour and movement you will find a harmonious whole in Poons’ work.
