Gio Pomodoro, bronze, 1971
The Italian artist Gio Pomodoro is known for his often large sculptures and jewellery designs. He took the static out of sculptures by incorporating supple forms that insinuate movement. He created a play of light and shadow that stand out due to their three-dimensional nature. His monumental sculptures have an important environmental factor. Gio and his brother Arnoldo take on a prominent role in post-war Italian art.
The large bronze statue called ‘Marat’ is from the world’s superyacht Nabila, named after the daughter of Saudi yacht-builder and billionaire Adnan Khashoggi. His ship was used in the James Bond film ‘Never Say Never Again’ and was also an inspiration for rock band Queen who released a song about it. The bronze statue that was attached to the moving ship’s deck, with its undulating forms and polished surface, has always shown a fitting harmony with the undulating movements and shimmering reflections with which we also enjoy the sea.
