Cindy Sherman, gelatin silver print, 1999
The American photographer Cindy Sherman initially focused on the representation of women and the female body. She often modeled in front of her camera and questioned identity and personality. With series based on film stills, fairy tales and art history, she mainly mocked feminine clichés. The photographer also unapologetically defies every principle of aesthetics and reality using dolls as models. Her rich imagination is also known for gruesome representations of time.
‘Untitled #348’ is part of one of her exclusive doll series. She tells the story of a muscular body of a doll carrying a weapon. It is a scene in which the facial expression also contrasts with what one expects from a doll. Her face no longer offers the expression of a child, she looks deeply sad and does not offer us a beautiful message. The weapon, the doll, the reality full of violence – a great artist creates the true image of its time.
